To clarify the work-around: "mtdparts" itself should not be changed. Instead, 
make the change when copying "mtdparts" into "bootargs", e.g.,

setenv bootargs rootfstype=jffs2 root=/dev/mtdblock4 console=ttySAC0,115200 
console=tty0 loglevel=8 "mtdparts=neo1973-nand:0x00034000(u-boot),0x00004000
(u-boot env),0x00200000(kernel),0x00130000(initrd),0x03c98000(rootfs)"
