Word from Tommi Komulainen (author of sapwood):

But differences to pixmap engine really quickly:
      * 'recolorable' keyword is removed
      * 'border' values must leave at least 1px in the center (no
        gradients)
      * 'shaped' (boolean) must match whether the image has alpha
        channel (think rounded corners) or not when the image is used
        for painting GtkMenu or GtkWindow derivative
      * only supports 1-bit alpha
      * images are not scaled but the pixels between the borders are
        tiled

Especially the two last points may be a killer for us.
