What's the real scope of hardware openness?

I like the OP's idea, whatever technically hard to achieve with actual
divice, not because Im a sociopath, but because I find the idea elegant.
No more need for costly and hideous GSM antennas...
Much more robust (many routes to a destination)...

I find the idea of cooperative network elegant.
