I'm not sure about the openness of the hardware, but check out the upcoming EeePC from Asus.  It's what I've been waiting for for a loooon gtime: basic computer, small screen, wifi, Linux, and only $200!

Between the EeePC and the Neo, I'm going to broke but have my hands full of goodies!
