You mention the idea might be patented. Would you happen to know (or
be able to find) any of the patents? Maybe it is only patented in
parts of the world, so it could be implemented freely elsewhere.

A dedicated third party seems not to be needed if you use GPSfriends
(which will require a third party, though).
