It may seem obvious to you that copyright law is about protecting
authors, but the first widespread usage of copyright (in England, at
least) was actually about censorship, offering a Guild of printers a
monopoly over the printing industry in exchange for their help in
preventing the publication of censored material. See wikipedia:
