There are several prepaid options from T-Mobile ($1/day, 10¢/minute, etc.) on their site http://www.t-mobile.com and they include t-zones (limited internet access).

Isn't it a hardware thing? I.e the GSM networks in the USA operate on a
different frequency? will it work at all with any carrier?
