It should upgrade the kernel in /boot but leave the one in mtd alone. Since 
opkg is doing the update it should take care of upgrading the modules to 
match the kernel. I'm going to be trying just that this afternoon to see if 
Andy's kernel update has fixed my SD issues, so I'll let you know how it 
goes.
