Hello, Lanzo. In which area will your boat be navigating? I mean, which coast are you talking about? It should be easy to get a reasonably good shapefile of that shoreline and you would be permanently informed of the distance to the nearest vertex.

gvSIG Mobile 0.1.4 was released today, here's a guide that should help you:

Create a shapefile of your coast line (or download a shapefile for a
