I'll try to fix this in new images. In meanwhile you can add this line
to /etc/fstab:
tmpfs /vas/cache/apt tmpfs defaults,noatime 0 0
and add this line to /etc/rc.local:
mkdir -p /var/cache/apt/archives/partial

No no need to compile anything. I dont include libmad, because of
patent issues. But there is installed application called qmplayer
that can play ogg/mp3/avi. The application will download mplayer
binary from my site when you first try to play some media.
