terminal app

Is anyone in particular in "charge" of the terminal application?

A few questions that I haven't seen on the lists (using the search on
openmoko.markmail.org)

1. Changing root's default shell in /etc/passwd to /bin/bash makes the
terminal app not start up correctly. I haven't tested if this is due to
having a colored prompt, but with /bin/bash, the terminal app starts
(white screen) but then it hangs and no prompt shows up.
If I leave root's shell alone (/bin/sh), obviously the terminal app
starts just fine ... and if I type 'bash' at the terminal prompt, starts
up a secondary bash shell just fine... complete with colored prompt,
bash_history, etc., which leads me to #2:

2. If the Freerunner's keyboard offered up/down directional arrows or
CTRL-R, would we be able to scroll through a command history using
/bin/sh, or is that a bash-only shell feature?
