Have you considered working with Christopher Hall's test rootfs script?
~ It seems the biggest problem for these kind of projects is bitrot, both
uses of the script will benefit if it is more commonly used, more people
are motivated to keep it up to date, etc.

What's actually missing from Chris' script that you need?
