Its technically possible but I have never tried to do it. Once I have an
OE build done then that has everything I need for software development.
So bending over backwards for the toolchain always seemed like such a
hassle.
Also OE only takes 3 hours the first time. Once that is done the longest
it takes to do a rebuild is about 20 minutes. But rebuilds from scratch
are very rare.

ffmpeg? I didn't think that was even in the basic images. You'll need to
give more details.

Yes, I only ever use the toolchain inside OE. Works for everything I
want to do.
