Thats a well known bug, use the command line to start up the gsm
modem/connect to the network. The taskbar crashing bug seems to be
fixed on the latest build.

Go to this page http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Phase_1_Software_Testing
and download the latest builds ( 20070818 with kernel 2.6.21.1-r1 at
the bottom of the page), I've got the next one up from that and alot
of the issues you bring up are fixed, such as the font size in the
terminal being bigger (too big in my opinion), there is now power
managment, press the power button for a few seconds and a menu will
come up with options such as 'full PM' (blanks screen) and 'dim only'
(dims screen).
I should mention this build has a new UI so to get a keyboard and
terminal you'll have to tap the 'plus' symbol at the bottom of the
'today' screen and select input manager to get that white patch which
you need to get a keyboard, and further down there is terminal.
