Mine works (debian sid).  I have these in my /etc/network/interfaces, no
"auto usb0" line:

allow-hotplug usb0                                                                                                                                           
iface usb0 inet static                                                                                                                                       
	address 192.168.0.200                                                                                                                                
	netmask 255.255.255.0    

You can even put a script to /etc/network/if-up.d to set up NAT
automagically.
