I thought you said the qtopia images don't run, suggesting you thought 
it might have been a hardware issue.  In the interest of diagnosing the 
issue I thought I would try a solution that would undoubtedly work.  As 
Lorn said, the lock should go away after a while if it doesn't recognize 
your sim.  As for using openmoko, are you sure that you are using the 
latest kernel with the latest root image?  Make sure you are doing so.
