Keyboard and non-US characters?

I tried out:

Openmoko-openmoko-devel-image-glibc-ipk-P1-Snapshot-20080404-om-gta01.rootfs.tar.gz

I am wondering when we will see support for more than just US characters?

Then, I liked the qwerty-keyboard style input method and I really hate 
the regular mobile phone keypad input method, so I wonder when we will 
see support for both (selectable?) as I don't anticipate that the latter 
will go away?
