doing a new theme for it is definitely easier and testable on the desktop in a
window - as you mentioned, it can be used even during x startup in a generic
way as it works there too. but it is not as small and lean as psplash.

cool. the tmpfs is there because it needs a socket for comms. this is generic
from the desktop world where u have a read-only initrd and root fs before its
mounted read-write later. for us as such, we don't need it, but tmpfs was there
and as such i just followed the well trodden path as i know why.
