As I understand the geometry.
Yes, it will just about work.
You will not get it mounted 'properly'.
Unsolder the existing connector, solder leads on, enlarge the hole, 
modify the plastics next to the battery compartment to allow for the 
slightly larger socket. If the new socket is only 3-4mm longer than the 
existing one, then it can be butted against the battery connector.

Apply either epoxy, or hot-melt (I'd use hot-melt) to secure it in place.

However.
I have the tools to do this.
There is no way I'd dream of doing this.
The much simpler solution is to simply remove the 3.5mm plug, and 
replace with a 2.5mm one.
