This reminds me that on some old Siemens mobile I once had, you could
get the IDs and signal strengths of all received base stations by typing
in some obscure key sequence. This would allow you to do a sort of lo-fi
location estimation (iPhone does that, too, I guess). 

Or is it possible to get that information in some other way, without
directly messing with the baseband chip?
