Sounds like more exciting PMU troubles that continue on GTA02.

As described, what this would make me think about is grabbing a spare
USB-A to microAB plug cable, and cutting the red wire in there so no
power comes.  But otherwise AFAIK it should recognize the logical USB
connection.  Then, if the poweroff is to do with PMU and charging, you
might avoid triggering it and can stay up on battery for your flashing
action.
