Debug board - giving up

Hi!
I cannot get the debug board JTAG to work :(

I tried everything according to the wiki pages but the situation only
got worse - currently openocd does not detect anything anymore
regardless of what I do, it just sais "JTAG communication failure..."

I tried unplugging everything and waiting, pressed the NEO's power
button, etc. etc. nothing.

What I am wondering is why programming the new FTDI EEPROM already seems
to fail (though no error is reported) and I still see the FTDI USB IDs?
And could openocd at all work with the FTDI IDs in the EEPROM (which
what I am doing since the other way failed) or do I really need the
OpenMoko version of the EEPROM?

At least so far I have a bricked NEO and seemingly no way to unbrick it
:( quite a pity...
