Own "overlay" for OpenEmbedded

I plan to use a own "overlay" for my applications directly in OE.
Therefore I want to have a own directory with my .bb, task and image files.
The problem is, that I'd need some apps/libs that are in OE already, but not
working or not in the version that I would like to have.
How can I tell OE to use the files from my directory preferred to the
equally named ones of the OE dirs?
Is it maybe just a question of the path's order in the local.conf?
