How about Vmware? There should be a free download from Vmware's site, and they
have a free Ubuntu virtual machine, all set up and ready to run. Takes some
memory, and some download time. I use Vmware extensively and love it.

Last time I checked, the Ubuntu virtual machine was called something like
"network appliance".

You can of course install an OS of your choice.

If you do take this path, let us know how it goes. I think it may be an
interesting solution for others with platform issues.
