Linux VServer is an alternative with less overhead:
http://linux-vserver.org/Welcome_to_Linux-VServer.org
Virtual servers use the same kernel as the host, but the distribution in
the virtual servers may be different.
But it patches the kernel. A simple shroot might be better.
