Werner,

This sounds very much like Quickwriting
http://mrl.nyu.edu/projects/quikwriting/ a version of which was done for
the Agenda VR3 http://agtoys.sourceforge.net/aqw/aqw.html.  I found it
easy to learn and use.  While it was intended for stylus use, perhaps
you can get some ideas...
