The OpenEmbedded wiki and manuals should be helpful.

You better do this 'offline', not as part of a build. Try:

bitbake -c devshell virtual/kernel.

In the terminal window that opens then:

make menuconfig ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-linux-
