Change kernel configuration?

I can do my changes but the make doesn't succeed. If I do "> make",
the result is:

"/bin/sh: arm-angstrom-linux-gnueabi-gcc: command not found"

So I tried ">  make ARCH=arm
and the result is:

unrecognized option
use the --help option for usage information
make[1]: *** [init/main.o] Error 1
make: *** [init] Error 2"
