I just upleveled the git U-Boot to be based on current mokopatches, I
immediately noticed it has broken operation without a battery (ie, on
USB power only) in the same way I described some days ago with the long
glitch on VB_SYS due to starting charging with nothing in there to charge.

If you don't have a battery it can explain it.
