Wolfgang handed me a device in landscape and the flickering is pretty
undeniable.  Normally if something has a low frequency flicker like that
it is a "beat" product of two related frequencies, I didn't understand
what the second frequency we are beating against could be.

The other possibility is that the "flicker" is in fact the decay of the
pixel level at the TFT transistor and our refresh rate is very low.

If olv has meddled with this maybe he can throw more light.
