I set up an automated test for this with and without DFU:
svn.openmoko.org/developers/werner/bug1252/

The device under test was freshly devirginated with today's files from
buildhost.

Results:

- I did find several failures for usb0 to come up, but they were generally
  caused by the kernel hanging, not an isolated USB problem.

- I did not find any evidence that DFU made things worse. To the contrary,
  the tests with DFU did a little better :-)

I didn't see anything that looked like this, though.

Could you perhaps try and run my scripts, to see with what frequency
that problem appears or if my tests are actually suitable for reproducing
the problem ?

The hangs came from the Glamo driver. I'll describe them in a separate
mail.
