How to set console to USB on Freerunner

Hi,

The Freerunner bootloader menu does not offer a "set serial to USB"
option. I seem to remember that someone posted a way to do this but now 
I can't recall who or how. Can someone remind me?

For GTA01 when flashing an image smaller than the previous one with early
versions of the boot loader it was necessary to erase the NAND partition
first. Is this still necessary?
