As I understood it, it contain[ed|s] personalized info specific to the
device (although it was proposed to contain test logs at one time which
seemed a bit pointless to me).

lol, didn't want to wear them out.

You can use magic partition names with dfu now like "kernel", on GTA02
U-Boot at least.  Presumably it's also the case with GTA01 which would
mean you can abstract your way around the problem.
