USB keyboard vs. /dev/tty1

Fellas, have you tried a USB keyboard on /dev/tty1 (not X windows)?
I can type [a-z] but [0-9] etc. have bits mangled.

Is this a [Debian] kernel issue?

I also notice in X windows the arrow keys keycodes are 198... on the
GTA02v6 instead of 98...

I suppose I'll have to use xmodmap to fix them if I can't find the cause.
(However on /dev/tty1 they give the correct escape sequences to bash.)
