Hum it all makes thinking about diconnected batteries and VB_SYS issue
sound rather unconvincing.

Maybe the struggle is just waiting until the backup battery is exhausted
and the PMU goes to NOPOWER and whatever it is that is evil in there
gets reset.  But I don't have a story why $EVIL_IN_PMU would get set
during flashings particularly.

Like Werner said NOR doesn't have the looping business until it feels
the battery is empty either so that can't be going wrong in NOR case.

Did both you and your colleague use the same kind of PC to flash,
anything unusual about the OS?
