Given the problems with development resource that OM has at the minute
it'd make life a lot easier to keep what's upstream already in sync with
mainline as far as possible - it tends to make life much easier in the
long run.  For most incremental development this is usually relatively
easy, you're more likely to run into issues pushing things like new
drivers upstream.

The other option is that either someone else will have to push the patch
after applying it or later on someone updating against upstream is going
to have to figure out why the change isn't upstream - and possibly
resolve conflicts with an alternative upstream solution to the problem
if someone fixes it for some other system.
