creating debain image/tar for download

i'd like to turn the cotents of my 512mb sd card into an image and a tar
ball, so others simply could download an use them w/o need to go through
that whole installation process.
but there's a little snag i hit: i already set a password for the root
account.
since i don't use the 512mb card (too small) i can't simply reset the
password (actually, i am not sure if debian would allow that at all).

so, is
/etc/shadow
the right file and should a passwordless root account there look like this:
root::14107:0:99999:7:::
?

to answer further questions: michael shiloh already offered to host the
resulting files.
for ease of use i intend to create 3 files actually:
- one image of the whole card
- one image of the boot partition (8mb)
- one tar ball of the contents of the system partition

if someone has anything to say about that (especially the arguments for
tar), speak now or forever hold your peace!
