You may just have been lucky with the timing. With that configuration 
for eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces the dhcp requests are started as 
soon as wpa_supplicant is started, not when it manages to associate. If 
association happens before the three dhcp attempts time out then you get 
an address. If association happens after that then you have a connection 
but get the 'no lease, failing' message you note. You can manually start 
a new dhcp request at this point to get an address, ideally echoing the 
pid to the location expected by the network scripts so that dropping the 
interface works as expected. I don't remember the details though.
