I don't think this is a good idea, as they'll be no visual indication that a
surface can scroll if you hide the indicators when not scrolling. Is there a
use-case for this mode?

Also, this patch just stops drawing indicators and leaves a blank space where
they would otherwise be, unless I'm misreading it? Is that intended?
