Multiplexing the USB and audio would eliminate any chance of using both the 
headphones and an unpowered USB addon at the same time, severely limiting the 
hackability (is that even a word ?) of the phone.

Don't these cost (an order of magnitude) more than simple headphones + an 
adapter ?
