Indeed, with a limited command set it shouldn't be impossible to do. If
Sphinx is for some reason not up to it, then something more focused
(read: less generic).

Quite a while back I tried a voice recognition package whose name I
sadly can't recall that did comparison to prerecorded samples (which
would, as you noted, be at least somewhat speaker dependent and the
training is a small bother, but nevertheless such a thing would do just
fine if you just want to activate predetermined functions). Worked
pretty well on an 486/66.
