According to the documentation that was online at launch it is mplayer based :(

I'd certainly push for gstreamer, since it's only a matter of time someone runs it on a
cameraphone and wants to use telepathy. An inside source has hinted that they want to dump
mplayer for gstreamer, so fingers crosssed...
