Sorry for the late response. I have setup OM2008.8 (August 20, 2008)
without requiring the above.

I have updated the same in the presentation (v1.3):

http://shakthimaan.com/downloads/glv/presentations/openmoko-free-your-phone.odp
http://shakthimaan.com/downloads/glv/presentations/openmoko-free-your-phone.pdf

I have used the following on Debian Etch:

  sudo apt-get install subversion build-essential help2man diffstat
texi2html texinfo cvs gawk zip unzip cogito
  sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev zlib1g-dev libssl-dev libgtk2.0-dev
  sudo apt-get install ca-certificates
  mkdir moko
  cd moko/
  wget http://www.rwhitby.net/files/openmoko/Makefile
  make setup
  make setup-machine-freerunner
  make openmoko-devel-image

If any package build fails when doing 'make openmoko-devel-image',
clean the package using:

  make clean-package-<packagename>

and re-do 'make openmoko-devel-image'.
