First, because I didn't look very hard to find something close enough to what
I needed :-)

What I needed was a protocol to synchronize a set of "things" organized in
folders, with the ability to store the same "thing" in several places, in
realtime if connected but with an offline mode, with some kind of access
permissions, and suitable both for atomic messages like calendar event and
realtime flow like voip.

None of syncml nor opensync fits this description.

Starting from stracth is very unprofessional, but being bound to nothing is
a virtue when you just want a prototype to test new ideas.
