DLR chose the FreeRunner for various reasons, among them: reasons:

*) Testing how mobile communications consumer electronics behaves under these 
environmental conditions,
*) Being able to 100% control what is running on the device (i.e. being 
_REALLY_ REALLY really sure that RF is turned off),
*) Measuring accelleration

Did I mention they ran FSO? :)
