You can do this (copied from qgcide.deb postinst action):

# rescan .desktop files so that we appear on the list
. /opt/qtmoko/qpe.env
qcop QPE/DocAPI 'scanPath(QString,int)' /opt/qtmoko/apps/Applications 1
