Touch input smoothing

Is there any information out there regarding how the touch screen, and
ultimately X processes, touch input? In particular, does it register
one single point or perform an average over some area? If it does not
do the latter, I would like to try experimenting with implementing
that to get more accurate touches. This would, of course, assume that
one could get all that data out of X or the hardware.
