Speed up System Initialization

Hi,

I started looking at boot time optimization in my spare time and
found several open bugs/tickets ([1] in particular), a page in the wiki
[2] and various (recurring) postings on the devel ML [3][4]. It seems
that the various authors/people (from OM and the community) that have
looked at cutting down the boottime made progress in different areas.
Absurdly nobody has actually published their changes/patches let alone
documented what they actually did. The issue/discussions might have
dropped under the table because "openmoko-devel" got renamed to "devel"
this august...

Since this is a rather disappointing state and I am not keen on redoing
work (especially mistakes), that others might have already done, I would
like to ask people who have worked on this issue some questions:

Concerning [3]: Graeme, how far did you get with your work on replacing
udev with mdev? Are there any comment/patches/hints that you could provide?

Concerning [4]: Fred, you seem to have done some work on the init
scripts. Do you have any patches/comments/hints that you could provide?

I hope other people that are working on this issue will reply to the
email so the fragmentation and thus duplication of work can be reduced
to some extent...

For those wanting to create some bootcharts I attached a recipe for Fred
Chien's bootchart-lite (see [3]).
