I'm not sure why it's so slow for you, but I just did a x11perf -dot on
my freerunner and the number I'm seeing are:
6000000 reps @ 0.0009 msec (1170000.0/sec): Dot
6000000 reps @ 0.0009 msec (1170000.0/sec): Dot
6000000 reps @ 0.0009 msec (1170000.0/sec): Dot
6000000 reps @ 0.0009 msec (1170000.0/sec): Dot
6000000 reps @ 0.0009 msec (1170000.0/sec): Dot
30000000 trep @ 0.0009 msec (1170000.0/sec): Dot

This was done with ShadowFB disabled. In case you did your test with
ShadowFB enabled:

10000000 reps @ 0.0005 msec (1900000.0/sec): Dot
10000000 reps @ 0.0005 msec (1900000.0/sec): Dot
10000000 reps @ 0.0005 msec (1900000.0/sec): Dot
10000000 reps @ 0.0005 msec (1900000.0/sec): Dot
10000000 reps @ 0.0005 msec (1900000.0/sec): Dot
50000000 trep @ 0.0005 msec (1900000.0/sec): Dot
