i am simply using Werner's scripts that generate /root for initramfs
image, nothing too sophisticated on my side.

i am not sure how to measure udev performance - for me, mdev takes no
extra space. udev takes much longer to start (in this particular case).

You can test my image from here: http://vanous.penguin.cz/files/om/menu/
just flash a kernel, that's it. you can also see there my
kernel .config etc...

(you'll need either qi or change your boot env to this:

  setenv bootcmd setenv bootargs \${bootargs_base} \${mtdparts}\; nand
  read.e 0x32000000 kernel 0x500000\; bootm 0x32000000

(if the kernel gets bigger, kernel 0x500000 needs to be adjusted)
